These networks function exclusively as processing infrastructure, leaving card issuance to third parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two most important open card networks worldwide are <\/span><b>Visa and Mastercard. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/paynopain.com\/en\/blog\/paynopain-principal-member-visa-and-mastercard\/\"><b>PaynoPain is a principal member of both<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing our autonomy, strengthening our brand, and enhancing our competitiveness within the global payments ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Closed networks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In closed networks, the same company that provides the network also <\/span><b>issues the cards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly to customers and, in many cases, acts as the acquirer as well. This means the network manages both card issuance and payment processing, as is the case with <\/span><b>American Express.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_card_networks_work_in_a_transaction\"><\/span><b>How do card networks work in a transaction?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>Payment initiation<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The customer uses their card at a physical point of sale or at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paynopain.com\/en\/glossary\/checkout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checkout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> page of an online payment gateway, either by entering card details, swiping the magnetic stripe, inserting the EMV chip card, or making a contactless payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>Network connection<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paynopain.com\/en\/glossary\/payment-gateway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">payment gateway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sends the transaction request to the <\/span><b>payment processor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in turn contacts the <\/span><b>card network <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to request transaction authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><b>Authorization<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The card network verifies whether the transaction can be approved. If the network is also the card issuer, it makes the authorization decision directly.
