An API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of rules and protocols that allows two software systems to communicate with each other. It acts as a bridge that enables different applications to exchange information and functionalities without needing to know each other’s internal details.
In the payments sector, APIs allow a store, app, or management system to connect with a payment gateway, processor, or financial service provider to authorise, process, and manage transactions, as well as receive payment status notifications without manual intervention.
APIs work by exposing endpoints through which one application can send requests to another and receive responses. For example, when an e-commerce platform sends payment details to a payment gateway via an API, the payment system processes the request and returns a result (approved or declined), which the ecommerce platform can use to update the order status.
