Card present (CP)

What is a CP or card-present transaction?

A card-present transaction means that a payment has been made using a physical card — also known as an in-person payment. A transaction is considered “card present” only when the payment details are captured in person, at the exact moment of the sale. This happens when:

Swiping a magnetic stripe card
Inserting a chip (EMV) card into a card reader
Using a contactless (NFC) card reader

It’s a traditional type of transaction, such as making a purchase at a physical retail store.
