Card Present (CP)

What does Card Present (CP) mean?

Card Present (CP) refers to payment transactions in which the cardholder is physically present at the point of sale when completing the transaction.

Characteristics of CP transactions

  • The card is inserted into a physical POS, swiped via its magnetic stripe, or tapped on an NFC card reader.

  • Authentication is performed through physical or electronic methods, such as PIN, EMV chip, or contactless, depending on the transaction type and amount.

  • The risk of fraud is generally lower than in Card Not Present (CNP) transactions because the card and cardholder can be physically verified.

When does a CP transaction occur?

A transaction is considered Card Present when the cardholder is physically present when making the payment. The most common cases are:

  • Payments in physical stores using credit or debit cards.

  • Purchases with contactless (NFC) cards in supermarkets, restaurants, or public transport.

  • Payments with a physical POS at stores and in-person points of sale.
