NFC

What is NFC?

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range wireless communication technology that allows data exchange between devices when they are physically close. It is the same technology used in contactless payments with cards and smartphones and is widely integrated into smart devices to perform fast and secure transactions.

How does NFC technology work?

NFC technology is based on radio frequency and operates at the 13.56 MHz band, without the need for cables or complicated pairings. When an active NFC device comes close to another device or NFC tag, a shared magnetic field is generated that allows bidirectional communication.

NFC operating modes

  • Reader/Writer: allows reading or writing information on NFC tags.
  • Card Emulation: turns the device into a payment card, transit pass, or digital key.
  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P): allows sharing photos, contacts, or files between devices.

Key features of NFC technology

  • Short range: works only at a short distance (approximately 4 cm), making it a more secure technology as it is difficult to intercept the signal from afar.
  • No manual pairing required: unlike Bluetooth, communication is automatically established when devices are brought close.
  • Compatibility with NFC tags: can interact with passive chips to trigger actions such as opening websites or connecting to WiFi.
  • Low energy consumption: NFC technology is efficient and suitable for portable devices due to its low power usage.

Everyday uses of NFC technology

This technology has multiple practical uses in daily life:

  • Contactless mobile payments: pay with your phone or smartwatch in seconds, without cash or a physical card. Common examples include Google Pay and Apple Pay.
  • Access control: use your phone or card to enter offices, gyms, hotels, public transport, or events without physical keys.
  • Public transport: many cities use NFC to instantly pay for metro, bus, or train tickets.
  • Events and concerts: digital tickets with NFC allow fast entry without queues or paper tickets.
  • Device-to-device information exchange: send contacts, photos, or links by bringing two compatible phones close.
  • Promotions and loyalty programs: NFC cards or wristbands that accumulate points or activate discounts when passed over a reader in stores or restaurants.
