Authentication

What is Authentication?

Authentication is the process based on verifying a user’s identity. It is carried out to ensure that the person is truly who they claim to be, thereby guaranteeing the security of a specific action such as accessing a device, logging in, or confirming a transaction.

Types of Authentication

  • Single-Factor Authentication (SFA): uses only one verification method (e.g., a password).
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): combines two or more methods (e.g., password + SMS code).
  • Strong Customer Authentication (SCA): a regulatory requirement in the EU that mandates at least two authentication factors for digital payments.

Authentication in Digital Payments (PSD2)

In the context of digital payments, the PSD2 regulation (Payment Services Directive 2) sets stricter security requirements to protect users and reduce online fraud. One of the key measures is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).
