Upselling

What is upselling?

Upselling is a sales technique that involves offering a potential or existing customer a product or service similar to the one they intend to purchase, but with greater value, higher quality, or enhanced features.

Unlike cross-selling (which aims to sell complementary products, such as a phone case for a smartphone), upselling seeks to encourage customers to spend more within the same product category by improving their initial choice.

Upselling example

When a user is about to subscribe to a basic software plan and the platform suggests the “Premium” plan, which includes advanced automation features.

Another example would be an appliance ecommerce store that, when a customer is about to purchase a 50-inch television, suggests a 55-inch model for a very small additional cost.

Types of upselling

Upselling can be classified into different types depending on the improvement offered to the customer, such as:

  • Premium or upgraded versions: This involves offering the customer a superior, enhanced, or higher-quality version of the product or service they originally selected. A common example is smartphones in their “Pro” versions, which typically include improvements in the camera, processor, display, and other features.
  • Greater capacity / size: This consists of offering a version with a larger quantity, storage capacity, or volume for an attractive price difference, increasing the perceived value for the customer. An example would be a software licensing plan that increases from 10 to 20 licenses for a compelling price.
  • Upgrades and extensions: Most commonly seen in SaaS services, this approach involves offering customers the ability to unlock limitations of their current plan. An example is improving image and sound quality on video or audio streaming platforms.
  • Replacement with a newer product: This consists of presenting the latest version of a product or service to a customer who has shown interest in a previous version. For example, displaying a new television model alongside its predecessor so customers can compare them and choose the more advanced option.

Benefits of upselling for businesses

Implementing upselling strategies as part of your commercial strategy helps increase average ticket value and maximize profit margins by taking advantage of a moment when the customer already has a strong purchase intent.

Moreover, when done correctly, upselling is not simply about selling a more expensive product; it is about offering an option that provides greater value to the customer and enhances their experience.

In the digital environment, integrating these recommendations throughout the purchasing process, even before the payment stage, allows businesses to make the most of every sales opportunity without adding friction to the user experience.
