Digital payments have long since become part of our daily routine and have completely transformed the way we shop, both online and in physical shops. Tools such as digital wallets, Bizum, or mobile payments have become popular due to the convenience, speed, and security they offer, and for many people, they’re now the preferred payment option.

However, although more and more people are using them, there are still some who remain reluctant. This is because certain misconceptions continue to persist: some believe that paying with a mobile is unsafe, or that these technologies are only for young people. But how much truth is there in all of this? We explain everything below.

Are digital payments really secure?

Fast, convenient payments tailored to your customers

Digital payments have come a long way in recent years and are now a practical, secure, and very convenient option. Breaking down myths such as them being unsafe, not suitable for all ages, or unnecessary for certain businesses is essential if we want more people to adopt them and embrace more modern payment methods that better suit their lifestyle.

Below, we debunk five common misconceptions about digital payments and explain why more and more people are choosing to use them.

Myth 1. “Paying in cash is safer”

This is probably one of the most widespread myths. As the oldest method of payment, cash often gives a sense of security simply out of habit. But in reality, it’s easy to lose, can be stolen, and it’s not uncommon to come across counterfeit notes.

On top of that, carrying large sums of money to make major purchases is never a good idea, and in Spain there is a legal limit of 1,000 euros for any cash transaction to prevent tax fraud.

It’s worth highlighting that digital payments come with advanced security systems such as two-factor authentication or biometrics (e.g. fingerprint or facial recognition), which add extra layers of protection to prevent unauthorised access to sensitive data.

Another advantage that is often overlooked is that digital payments automatically record all card transactions. This removes the need for manual tracking, saves time, and reduces the likelihood of errors.

Myth 2. “Paying by mobile isn’t as safe as using a card”

Nothing could be further from the truth. Paying by mobile is, in many cases, even more secure than using a physical card. It has extra layers of security, like the ones we mentioned earlier, which make it very difficult for anyone to access your data without permission.

In addition, paying by mobile, for example, with digital wallets like Google Pay, Apple Pay, or Bizum, is extremely convenient. You don’t need to carry your wallet, and you can manage all your cards and transactions from a single app. Everything is in one place, giving you quicker access and easier control over your spending.

Myth 3. “If I shop online, my card can be cloned”

This fear remains common, although it’s important to know that online shopping is safe if certain precautions are taken. Only visiting trusted websites and avoiding public networks when making payments are basic steps to minimise risk.

On top of that, there are now measures such as the 3D Secure protocol and tokenisation, which ensure your data is fully protected during transactions. Payment gateways and banks also monitor activity constantly to detect any suspicious behaviour and act swiftly.

Additionally, there are single-use virtual cards, also known as disposable cards. These are created for a one-time transaction and are deleted afterwards, so they cannot be reused. They’re not yet widely known, but they’re a great option for shopping online and protecting your data from any threat, as stolen details cannot be used to make further purchases.

In general, shopping online saves time, allows you to purchase products and services without leaving your home, and often gives you access to exclusive offers not available in physical shops.

Myth 4. “Small businesses don’t need to accept cards”

There’s a common belief that only large businesses need to offer digital payment methods. But this is completely false: accepting credit or debit card payments, or using methods such as Bizum, Apple Pay, or PayPal, can make a big difference in the growth of a small business. This is because it makes purchasing easier for customers, prevents lost sales due to lack of cash, and projects a modern and professional image.

Nowadays, if you own a physical shop, you have access to many affordable and easy-to-implement solutions, from traditional card readers to innovative systems like Tap to Pay, which turns any Android mobile phone into a payment terminal. This means you don’t need to buy any extra device to accept payments.

And if you’re looking to manage online payments more effectively, having an online payment gateway allows you to automate transaction management and control, simplifying operations and reducing errors.

Myth 5. “Bizum, QR payments, or contactless are only for young people”

This belief is now quite outdated. Young people may have been the first to adopt these payment methods, but they’ve long since been embraced across all generations.

In fact, according to the 2024 survey “Payment methods: the final decision”, 81% of people over the age of 60 use cards or digital wallets to pay, and only 19% still prefer cash. These payment methods are secure, easy to use, and much faster than traditional ones.
