From cash to the digital era in less than 15 years

This is how payments in Spain have changed in 15 years

Paying has always been a simple act. From taking out cash, waiting for change, or even making transfers that could take up to 3 days to be received. But nowadays all of this has changed; it has practically disappeared.

We have realized that Spain has undergone a radical change in the payments sector. The implementation of e-commerce, payments with mobile devices, payment gateways… All these changes have made us as customers not only change the way we pay but also what we expect when making a purchase.

At PaynoPain we are celebrating 15 years and we have analyzed how payment methods have changed from when we started to today. And we have realized that we have gone from being used to slow, in-person processes to now having everything immediately and online.

When paying took days and it was normal

15 years ago, it was normal to send money or make a bank transfer and have to wait between one and three days for the money to reach its destination. Today this would be unthinkable, but back then people were used to waiting as long as necessary since immediacy didn’t exist.

In 2016, Bizum revolutionized everything. It transformed peer-to-peer payments in Spain, making it possible to send money in seconds from a mobile phone. Shortly after, this payment method also reached online stores, and more recently, from May 18, 2026, Bizum took a further step and was incorporated into in-store payments in Spain.

On the other hand, instant SEPA transfers also arrived, allowing transfers between bank accounts almost immediately, although their use is still not universal across all banks throughout the European area.

From cash to invisible payments

Digitalization of payment methods

Today, cash has lost all the prominence it once had, as many services have been implemented to replace it, such as:

  • Digital cards
  • Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay
  • Instant payments like Bizum
  • Experiences integrated directly into apps

These changes are not just trends; users confirm them. At PaynoPain, we conducted a survey of random users and the responses show that 20% of them already leave home without cash, and 71% say they carry a small amount of cash for unexpected situations, but less than €20.

Virtual POS and payment gateways: the new core of e-commerce

Keys to a secure payment gateway

Over the last 15 years, digital businesses have gone from being a minor channel to becoming a market that now exceeds €110 billion annually, according to the report “Online Shopping in Spain 2025” by ONTSI (Red.es).

This growth has also led to a transformation in the way merchants manage their payments, with the adoption of payment solutions such as virtual POS systems and online payment gateways.

Today, the checkout is not just another step in the purchasing process; it is a critical point that determines online sales. Losing a sale is easier than we think. If the payment process is slow, confusing, or offers too few payment methods, customers will not waste their time and will abandon the purchase.

For this reason, companies have had to evolve and seek the best solutions that enable fast, frictionless payments, multiple integrated payment methods, and maximum security.

More payment methods, higher user expectations

Users don’t think about potential issues when it comes to paying; they simply assume they will be able to pay quickly, choose how to pay, decide where to do it from, and complete the transaction whenever they want.

This normalization of immediacy has raised the level of expectations toward merchants, where the availability of multiple payment methods has become a key requirement to avoid losing conversion at checkout.

And although today it may seem like solutions such as Bizum have always been around, their adoption is relatively recent. Not long ago, splitting a bill was still done in a traditional way, and returning money meant resorting to bank transfers or cash.

Similarly, immediate and simple online financing options, such as Buy Now Pay Later, were practically nonexistent in the market or were not integrated into the purchasing experience as they are today, where they have become a common alternative within the digital checkout.

The rise of “invisible payments”

Automatic payments and subscriptions

Over the years, payment processes have become increasingly automated, to the point where they are now almost imperceptible within the consumer experience. This shift has been especially evident in subscription-based business models, digital platforms, and on-demand services.

In this context, many transactions no longer require active user intervention but are executed automatically based on usage or billing cycles, reducing friction in the purchasing process.

As a result, the moment of payment has ceased to be a conscious action and has instead become an integrated and continuous process within the user’s digital experience.

Security: the foundation that supports everything

With the digitalization of payments, security has become a critical element in the payments ecosystem. As payment volumes and available channels have increased, so too have the requirements for data protection and fraud prevention.

To address this challenge, the sector has developed and integrated advanced technologies such as tokenization, strong customer authentication (SCA), and end-to-end encryption. These solutions have helped reduce transaction risk and increase user trust in digital payments, both in online and in-person environments.

The future: payment will disappear

The payments sector is moving toward a new phase marked by automation and artificial intelligence. Trends such as Agentic Commerce point to a scenario where artificial intelligence will be able to manage purchasing decisions and payments autonomously, based on the user’s context and needs.

In this scenario, little by little, paying will stop being a visible process and will become an integrated functionality of the service itself, as a result of technological transformation and all the changes yet to come.

A transformation that has changed the way we buy

The impact of virtual POS systems on your business conversion

Since we founded PaynoPain back in 2011, payments have evolved from being a final step to becoming part of the overall shopping experience.

Having a virtual POS system or an efficient online payment gateway today not only helps businesses improve their day-to-day operations, but also influences conversion and customer satisfaction. And given the constant changes taking place, this suggests it is only the beginning.

If you need a payment solution for your business, whether POS terminals or an online payment gateway, write to us and our sales team will get in touch with you.
