How will Spanish people pay in 2025? Key payment trends to watch this year

Share

In Spain, the way we make payments is changing rapidly. Thanks to technological advancements and shifts in our consumption habits, the way we buy and sell is undergoing a significant transformation.
Digital payment solutions are gaining more and more prominence as they are faster, safer, and more practical. Meanwhile, the use of cash continues to lose relevance in our daily lives.

And this shift isn’t just happening in Spain. Across Europe, a more integrated payment system is being created, where cross-border platforms and unified regulations are breaking down barriers and encouraging the use of instant payment methods. This is transforming the payment experience for both users and businesses like never before.

Wallets and wearables: the leading payment solutions

Tools like mobile wallets and wearable devices make transactions faster and easier. They also showcase the commitment of tech companies to provide payment solutions that are increasingly accessible, personalised, and aligned with the needs of today’s consumers.

Key trends defining the future of payments

At PaynoPain, we’ve identified the key trends shaping the path towards a more agile, digital, and connected payment ecosystem:

Payments with smartphones and wearables

More and more people, especially younger generations, are adopting the habit of paying with their smartphones or even smartwatches. Payment methods like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and wearable devices are gaining popularity for one simple reason: they make transactions faster, more convenient, and contactless.
The ease of use and security of these options will be crucial in encouraging more people to use them in the coming years. Moreover, this preference is also prompting many businesses to integrate contactless payments in a simple and accessible way. According to our 2024 survey ‘Payment Methods: The Final Decision’, 66% of users prefer to pay using mobile wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay. Without a doubt, digital payments are marking a turning point in how we manage our money.

Interconnection of payment systems in Europe

The integration of platforms like Bizum in Spain, MB Way in Portugal, and Bancomat in Italy will enable instant transfers between European countries. This connection will remove barriers and make payments much easier and faster for users. Furthermore, it will boost the use of instant payments in an increasingly connected market.

Tap to Pay: a POS in your pocket

The Tap to Pay tool, which turns your Android phone into a POS, is gaining rapid traction. Without the need for additional equipment, it allows for quick and easy purchases, especially in small businesses and for freelancers. It’s ideal for professionals without a fixed workplace, such as delivery drivers and electricians, and for businesses with high customer traffic. Like contactless payments, Tap to Pay is growing thanks to new solutions that allow businesses to integrate these systems in an affordable and accessible way, without major investments in infrastructure.

Limits on cash usage

In Europe, restrictions on cash usage vary from country to country. In places like Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands, there are no limits on cash payments, while in countries like Spain, Portugal, and France, cash payments are restricted to between €1,000 and €3,000.

By 2027, the European Union plans to unify these regulations and set a maximum limit for cash payments across all member states. This will accelerate the adoption of digital payments and promote a safer, more transparent financial environment. In fact, PaynoPain’s research has revealed that only 10% of Spaniards use cash in their daily lives, while 52% prefer to use credit or debit cards.

The digital euro: the digital version of the European single currency

The digital euro is in the testing phase and is expected to be launched in the coming years. This new payment method will allow fast and secure transactions directly from a centralised account, without the intervention of commercial banks. It promises to be a more efficient and secure alternative, driving the digitalisation of payments across the eurozone.
