Craftgate and PaynoPain sign an agreement to drive the growth of digital payments in Spain

  • Wallet payments already account for 37% of in-store transactions and 25% of online purchases, according to the report “Payment Methods: The Final Decision” conducted by PaynoPain.
  • Digital wallets continue to consolidate their growth compared to cash, which drops to 9.9% daily use, while credit cards maintain their dominance (52%).
  • Security remains the number one priority for 67.3% of users, while flexibility is gaining ground, with 32.7% opting for deferred payments.

In an increasingly digital, fragmented, and fast-evolving payments landscape, where nearly 70% of users say they would easily try emerging payment technologies, payment orchestration is emerging as a technology that enables online merchants to experiment, optimize, and grow, even as consumer habits shift. Within this context, Craftgate, a leading payment orchestration platform, and PaynoPain, one of Spain’s most trusted payment service providers, have entered into a strategic partnership to make it easier for online merchants to integrate modern and secure payment methods.

This collaboration allows online merchants in Spain to access PaynoPain’s services directly from Craftgate’s unified platform. This orchestration-based approach is becoming increasingly essential, as recent data shows a significant shift in payment expectations. By integrating PaynoPain into its orchestration layer, Craftgate offers Spanish merchants the best of both worlds: access to a trusted payment provider and tools to operate in a global, technology-driven, competitive environment.

This alliance with Craftgate allows us to take another step forward in our mission to help online merchants sell more and better. Together, we facilitate access to modern, secure, and market-adapted payment methods, with quick and seamless integration into ecommerce platforms like Shopify,” said Jordi Nebot, CEO of PaynoPain.

PaynoPain is a leading player in the Spanish payments industry. With this partnership, Craftgate expands its network of acquirers in the market and can now offer PaynoPain’s international payment methods, such as MB Way, which are in high demand among companies looking to sell in Portugal,” said Jorge Sorial, Country Manager of Craftgate Spain. “As payment preferences diversify and expectations around security and flexibility grow, this strategic collaboration allows merchants not only to keep up but to stay ahead of emerging trends.”

Digital payments continue to grow in Spain, with increasing use of wallets and other alternative methods

As expectations around digital payments rise, online merchants face increasing pressure to deliver secure, flexible, and frictionless payment experiences. The survey conducted by PaynoPain, “Payment Methods: The Final Decision” (2024), not only confirms this trend but also paints a picture of an increasingly digitalized, fragmented, and user-experience-oriented payments landscape. Among the key findings, the dominance of credit and debit cards stands out, 52% of users say they use them daily, and nearly 60% identify them as their preferred payment method for online shopping.

However, the rapid rise of wallets is becoming increasingly evident, with 37.1% of users using them daily and 25.4% for online purchases, while PayPal (10.4%) and Bizum (1.5%) continue to grow. This highlights the importance of having solutions that provide a smooth and secure payment experience. Conversely, cash has been reduced to a mere 9.9% daily use, and 27.7% of users claim not to use it at all.

The data shows a significant shift in consumer behavior in Spain, where digital payments are consolidating as the preferred option due to their convenience and security. While cards still lead, the growth of wallets and other alternative methods shows that consumers are increasingly seeking modern, tailored solutions,” noted the CEO of PaynoPain.

Security and flexibility: top priorities in a digital environment

In a landscape clearly dominated by digital, security stands out as the most important factor in online payments for 67.3% of users, closely followed by convenience (57.9%). Beyond digitalization, the study also highlights a growing demand for flexibility, both in financing large purchases (14.5%) and in using deferred payment options (32.7%).

These priorities show that merchants must deliver payment experiences that are not only fast and frictionless but also trustworthy,” said Craftgate’s Country Manager. “Solutions such as deferred payments and installment financing allow users to manage their finances more efficiently, representing a valuable opportunity for merchants aiming to adapt to these new expectations.
